Overview
Tert-Amyl Alcohol (TAA)
Tert-amyl alcohol (TAA; 2-methyl-2-butanol, C₅H₁₂O) is a tertiary C5 alcohol. Because the hydroxyl group sits on a tertiary carbon, it does not oxidize to an aldehyde or ketone under normal conditions, which makes it useful both as a reaction solvent and as a source of the tert-amyl group.
Its main industrial outlets are agrochemicals — it is a raw material for pinacolone and, through it, for the triazole fungicides triadimefon and triadimenol (seed treatment) — together with synthetic musk fragrances, color-film couplers, and tert-amyl esters and ethers. It is also the alcohol used to make alkoxide bases such as potassium tert-amylate.
The grade on this page is ≥99.0% with water ≤0.1%, color ≤10 APHA and density 0.806–0.810 kg/L.

What the limits mean
What the limits mean
Water ≤0.1%
Water consumes base when TAA is converted to alkoxides such as sodium or potassium tert-amylate, and it competes in other moisture-sensitive steps. A 0.1% ceiling keeps that loss small.
Color ≤10 APHA
A tight color limit suits fragrance and imaging-chemical uses, where color bodies can carry through to the finished product.
Density 0.806–0.810 kg/L
The narrow density window gives a quick identity check at goods-in, alongside the assay.

Application chemistry
A documented industrial use of tert-amyl alcohol is as the solvent and metal-alkoxide source in diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) pigment manufacture. Sodium is dissolved in refluxing TAA (about 92–107 °C) to form sodium tert-amylate, and 4-chlorobenzonitrile and diisopropyl succinate are then added to give pigments such as Pigment Red 254. Sodium tert-amylate is sold as a strong, low-nucleophilicity base for deprotonation and for pharmaceutical synthesis.
As a solvent, TAA stays liquid at room temperature (melting point -9 °C), which makes it a practical alternative to tert-butyl alcohol; it boils at 102.4 °C. Supplier and hazard-database entries describe it as a solvent and intermediate in the synthesis of drugs and perfumes, with further uses in flavors, corrosion inhibitors, resins and coatings, and as a frother in ore flotation.
TAA is produced industrially mainly by acid-catalyzed hydration of 2-methyl-2-butene (isoamylene). It is a raw material for pinacolone and, through pinacolone, for the triazole fungicides triadimefon and triadimenol (a seed treatment); TAA is one of the published starting materials for pinacolone, together with isoamyl alcohol and isoamylene.
How this grade compares
Published grades of tert-amyl alcohol are listed at ≥99.0% (GC) with a density of about 0.81 g/cm³ at 20 °C, in line with the grade on this page (≥99.0%, density 0.806–0.810 kg/L, water ≤0.1%). Users who make sodium alkoxide from sodium metal, or who run other water-sensitive steps, state the water limit they need in the enquiry.
Storage and shelf life
Autoignition temperature 437 °C. Published closed-cup flash points are 19 °C and 20.5 °C.
Industrial tert-amyl alcohol is held in closed iron drums in a ventilated, cool, dry store, separated from oxidizers.
